Sunflower #2

“Don’t they just make you wanna smile?!”

This is something I hear over and over when people walk past my sunflowers. Then I smile, because anything that makes someone’s day happier is worth the effort! ...and, well, smiles are contagious!

Can any other flower claim to be as cheerful as the Sunflower!?

Their bright yellow petals mimic sunlight as they look to the sun all day, letting their little “faces” bask in its warmth. For you flower buffs, the act of sunflowers rotating during the day so the they are always facing toward the sun is called “phototropism.” I like to just think of it as the happiness that comes with living in the moment and being truly grateful for all one’s blessings.

Do you know someone who is a sunflower?

I would like to think we all have someone like that in our lives who brightens our day and makes us smile! That’s why I made this Sunflower painting for you to enjoy! Most of my artwork is based on the flowers I grow in my yard. I photograph them (or sometimes hire a friend to help with photos!) and use them as inspiration for my artwork. This piece, “Sunflower #2” was created in my signature style of collage-painting. I prepared a wood panel by cutting, sanding and staining it. This time, I used a light blue stain for the sky. For the background, I manipulated magazine pages in a way that lifts the ink off of the page and swirls it around. This made an abstract but very natural-looking background in a rich array of natural brown, olive, and purple/blue tones. I cut fancy art papers into the shapes of the leaves, stems and petals and drew details using colored pencils. After gluing everything in it’s proper place, I added shadows and highlights by painting with acrylics.

The original is 27” x 15” and comes wired and ready to hang, mounted on an off-black frame backer using glue and nails (overall size 29.5” x 17.5”). Mounting nails are exposed, adding to the hand-crafted look of the piece. This work took about 40 hours to create (not including the gardening). I hope these sunflowers make you smile as much as I do!
